About the NewSLU

The NewSLU was formed with the goal of keeping students informed about the happenings on campus and in the city of Madrid, our home for our college years, through vivid, fact-based reporting. We hope to create community on campus that unites permanent and study abroad students while celebrating the diversity.

Commitment to Professional Standards and Ethics

We attempt to adhere to professional reporting and writing standards and follow the guidelines expressed in the Society of Professional Journalist’s code of ethics, such as seeking to avoid harm and making good-faith efforts to ensure accuracy and fairness. As part of this commitment, we strive to avoid the use of anonymous sources and unsubstantiated rumor.

We only use original photographs and observe the guidelines of the National Press Photographers’ Association Code of Ethics.

For style issues, we adhere to the guidelines published in the Associated Press Stylebook, a standard for U.S. news media that sometimes differs from academic style.

The NewSLU receives financial support from the Saint Louis University Madrid Campus. The staff and editors receive guidance and training in professional standards from journalist Dale Fuchs, who teaches news writing, feature writing and multi-platform journalism. Some of the stories published here were originally written for those classes.

Opinion pieces published do not represent the views of Saint Louis University Madrid Campus or the newspaper staff.

Commitment to Human Reporting and Editing

The value of a news outlet depends on the credibility of its reporters and writers, its photographers and illustrators, its editors and sources. We feel that part of that credibility depends on our commitment to using only human-generated work. Editing is also done entirely by humans. Although generative A.I. tools can catch mechanical mistakes, they can also inject inappropriate tone, needless repetition, unsubstantiated generalizations and clichés of vision into written work, which is problematic for the journalistic values we strive to uphold.

If a submission contains passages or phrases that appear to be written or edited by a generative A.I. tool, the problematic passages will be removed by our editors. If that is impossible, the story will be rejected.
