Andrea Delascasas won first place as SpongeBob in SLU Madrid’s school-wide costume contest this Halloween, and second place was awarded to Maesa Waheed, 22, as Alan from the Hangover, according to the Student Government Association.

Third place was awarded to the student with the shark costume, who was unable to be reached for commentary.

Sixteen costumed students competed for the prizes: $75 for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third.

The Student Government Association promoted the costume contest using posters around campus, along with announcements in school-wide group chats and posts on instagram. The intent was to create community engagement and embrace school spirit, according to Club Coordinator Emma Scott, 21.

Members of SGA took photos of all the participants as they walked into campus, and then voted on their 6 favorite contenders in a private SGA group chat. These final contenders included costumes such as a mime, Spongebob, Alan from The Hangover, a shark, a cheerleader, and Día de los Muertos. The finalists were posted onto SGA’s instagram story, and students were encouraged to vote on their favorite costume. After hundreds of votes, the winners were announced on SGA’s instagram.

The winner, Delascasas, 21, reached out to her family and friends from Qatar and Colombia to accumulate more votes on the SGA instagram. “I asked literally everyone to vote for me, so I would’ve been so disappointed if I had lost,” said Delascasas, who sported a full face of yellow paint, and drawn-on buck teeth. “Luckily I won… so HA!”

Maesa Waheed was also excited about winning 2nd place. “I dressed up as a man with a full beard at school, so I was really hoping that my commitment would make people vote for me,” said Waheed. “But also…who am I kidding, I look sexy as a guy.”

The winners were awarded gift cards of their choice the week after the contest.
